The MPMS Economic Development Committee is working with the Mt. Pleasant Business Association, local business, and community service organizations to create the Small Business Improvement Program and bring resources to Mt. Pleasant businesses. The effort initiated in 2007 when MPMS and the Business Association worked with reStore DC to initiate a $2 million program for small business assistance in Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Heights. The objective was to support existing small businesses that will be impacted by the DC USA development, located two blocks from Mt. Pleasant.
The initial effort resulted in a Needs Assessment, including a survey of Mt. Pleasant visitors and residents, and visual surveys of Lamont Park, bike parking, and business facades.
The effort also set forth a plan to involve business assistance service providers and distribute funds. However, the City did not implement the plan. Currently MPMS and the Business Association are seeking to access Neighborhood Investment Funds and other opportunities for needed façade and commercial corridor revitalization.
